It's been a couple of months, but we haven't forgotten about you!  We've been busy getting the charter together, making sure we have everything necessary for a successful application, and getting lots of outside reviews.

Our charter is ready for signatures, and we are in signature drive mode.  You should have received the petition/signature announcement by now, which let you know about all of the opportunities to read the charter and sign the petition. The charter will be available on our website soon so you can read it at your leisure.

Drop us a line if you have any questions.

And, as always, please forward this email to anyone you know who is interested in an alternative for middle and high school.

Charter Application

As we researched the requirements for approval as a county school, we found that the criteria are different than for being approved by a district.  South Bay Prep doesn't fit those criteria, so we are applying to the Campbell Union High School District, the base for the majority of our supporters.  We are approaching the district with a positive outlook.  If, however, we are denied at the district level, we will appeal to the county.  We believe we have a very strong petition and a high probability of being approved for opening in Fall of 2008.

Hearing Dates

We will be submitting our petition on or very near October 2nd.  The district has up to 30 days from submission to hold an initial hearing and up to 60 days from submission to hold the decision hearing.  We will let you know as soon as we know what the dates of those meetings will be.

The CUHSD Board has regularly scheduled meetings on October 18, November 1, and December 6, so any of these are possibilities.  It is extremely important for you and all of our supporters to attend the initial hearing, as this meeting is specifically meant to gauge community interest.

Home Signings

Do you want to hold a home meeting of about 2 hours to allow people in your neighborhood to find out more about South Bay Prep and sign the petition?  If so, contact the board to set up a date and time.

Make sure your info is up to date

We don't have complete information on everyone in our mailing list database.  Complete information will help us determine how many potential students we have for the first three years of operation.

It's easy and doesn't take long at all.  Go to our website www.southbayprep.org, and enter your email address (the one at which you receive this letter) in the box on the left labeled, "Join the Mailing List."  You will see a screen asking you to press a button to send an email to your email address.  Follow the link in the email, verify/complete the information presented, and press Submit.  That's it, you're done!

If you receive this newsletter at more than one email address for the same child(ren), such as both spouses or someone with multiple email addresses, please enter the child information for one email address only.  Otherwise, we will count your child(ren) twice.

Facilities Search

We are working with a professional real estate agent but we would like everyone to be on the lookout for a potential site.  Desirable sites are in a central location in the Campbell Union High School District, close to transportation (light rail, bus line, and/or multiple freeways), with approximately 20,000 square feet of mostly open space.
